Shield
The 71st Infantry dates from 1850; it served for several short periods during the Civil War, including Bull Run, and the concentration of troops near Harrisburg to oppose Lee's march into Pennsylvania, it also served in the Santiago Campaign in the Spanish-American War and on the Mexican Border in 1916. During World War I the Regiment was mustered into Federal service as the 54th Pioneer Infantry, serving overseas in the Meuse-Argonne Operation and in the Army of Occupation. The present 71st Infantry National Guard is identical with the 54th Pioneer Infantry of World War I. The color combinations of the shield - gold and blue - have been used by the Regiment since 1852.
Crest
The crest is that of the New York Army National Guard.
The coat of arms was approved on 26 May 1923. It was amended to change the blazon on 13 October 1925.
